Motorcycle & Scooter Keys in Inch Park
The key turns half a rotation in the ignition, catches, then the blade lets go with a small snap.
In plain words
A motorcycle rarely has just one lock. The ignition and steering are usually paired, the seat has its own latch, and older machines add a keyed fuel cap, each of which may or may not share a cut with the others depending on how the factory keyed it. Key service starts by mapping which locks are on the machine and which of them the owner wants running from a single key, and bringing a seat or fuel-cap lock onto the ignition's cut is common where those cylinders are compatible and serviceable, though some models need a matched lock set instead.
How the visit goesThe dash lights come on, the starter cranks, and the engine simply refuses to catch, though the same key has run this bike since it was new. It could be the key and ignition module no longer agreeing, or an ordinary fuel or ignition fault sharing the same symptom.

How the visit goes

Mapping every lock on the machine
A motorcycle rarely has just one lock, so the locksmith walks around it noting the ignition and steering, the seat latch, a fuel cap on older models, and any storage compartment, top case or helmet lock fitted afterward. Each is checked against whichever key the owner has, since it is common for one or two of them to already share a cut while another was left on its own from the factory or a previous repair. Knowing the full list before starting means the finished key set covers every lock the owner actually wants, not just the one that prompted the call.
Pairing a new transponder
A machine with an immobiliser needs its electronics satisfied as well as its lock. Using either a remaining working key or programming equipment built for that system, the locksmith teaches the vehicle's module the new transponder's code where that system supports it, though some manufacturers require their own code key and a dealer procedure instead. The mechanical cut and the electronic pairing are separate steps and both have to succeed: a key can be shaped correctly and still fail to start the engine if the chip inside it was never taught to the machine, which is why this step is tested with a full engine start rather than just a turn of the switch.
The old key is no longer a concern
Where locks were rekeyed rather than simply cut around, whoever holds an old key is left with a blade that fits the keyway but normally will not turn the plug once it is rekeyed. That is worth mentioning to anyone who previously had access to the machine, such as a former co-owner or a shop that kept a copy on file, since the new combination makes their old key no more useful than a spare piece of metal. Keeping the new keys distinct in a bag or on a labelled ring avoids mixing them up with anything cut before the visit.

What affects the quote
Condition of the existing lock
A clean, well-maintained lock accepts a new key with little extra work. One affected by corrosion or grit may need cleaning or light service before a key can be tested reliably against it.
Any security upgrade added at the same time
Any additional item chosen during the same visit, such as a disc lock, an alarm, or a lockbox for a spare key, is priced as its own separate addition to the key work.
Bringing multiple locks onto one key
Bringing the seat, fuel cap or a storage lock onto the ignition's key is extra work per lock rekeyed, separate from cutting the key itself, and is priced as its own line.
What to have ready
- Has anyone already tried to cut or copy this key elsewhere?
- What is the make, model and year of the machine?
- Do you have registration or a bill of sale on hand?
Motorcycle & Scooter Keys: questions
QuestionsShould I get a whole new ignition switch or just a new key?
That depends on the lock's condition rather than the key alone. If the wafers and springs inside are still sound, a correctly cut key restores normal operation without any hardware changed. A lock with worn-oval wafers, a cracked housing, or damage from an earlier forced attempt is better replaced outright, since a new key cannot compensate for parts that have physically worn or broken.
Can a rusted or gritty lock still be opened and given a new key?
In most cases, yes. The lock is cleaned out, its wafers and springs cleared of grit and corrosion, and the mechanism dressed with whatever lubricant its own maker specifies before a new key is cut or tested. Only a lock that has corroded to the point of cracking or seizing solid tends to need outright replacement rather than cleaning, and that is usually visible once the lock is opened up for inspection.
Can the seat, fuel cap and ignition all be set to the same key?
On many serviceable, compatible systems, yes. Each lock is opened and its internal wafers are replaced with a set cut to match the ignition's combination, the same principle used to rekey a house lock applied to smaller hardware. Every lock is tested individually afterward so the finished key is confirmed against each one rather than assumed to work. Locks that were never on the same key from the factory can usually be brought together this way during one visit.
